Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton filed lawsuits against five major smart TV manufacturers in December 2025, accusing them of using Automated Content Recognition (ACR) technology to secretly collect consumer viewing data without proper consent.
The Lawsuits Targeted Companies: Sony, Samsung, LG, Hisense, and TCL.
The Allegations: The Texas Attorney General's Office claimed the companies used ACR tracking software to monitor everything displayed on screens—including streaming, cable, video calls, and connected security feeds—to build profitable user profiles.
The state also raised national security concerns regarding manufacturers with ties to China potentially sharing data.
Current Status and Settlements
Samsung: Reached an agreement in February 2026 to stop collecting ACR data without explicit consent and update disclosure/consent screens.
LG: Reached a settlement in May 2026 requiring clear pop-up disclosures, simple opt-out options on future models, and a strict ban on transferring viewing data to the Chinese Communist Party.
Remaining Cases: Lawsuits and legal proceedings against Sony, Hisense, and TCL remain ongoing.
