to use the Internet to Research your Genealogy

On
April 01, 2022, the U. S. Department of Commerce and its division The
U. S. Census Bureau will release the results of the 1950 U. S. Census
population and housing data. This is mandated by federal statute that
72 years after the census data has been gathered and collated the
results are then to be available to the public for study.

Did
you know that the U. S. Census is available on the internet for you
to use to research your family's genealogy?

It
is really convenient with the internet searches today and generally
can be a great place to start to research your family's genealogy. I
have now made up a chart for all my granddaughters that traces
back their genealogy at least five (5) generations!

METHOD
#1

Enumerator
-> a person employed in taking a census of the
population.
Enumeration District -> an area that could be
covered by a single census taker in one census period.

All
of the U. S. Census Population and Housing data is stored and
initially accessed through the Enumeration Districts (ED). Knowing
where the person(s) you are trying to research resided during the
year of the U. S. Census that is being analyzed may be a good way to
find the data that you wish to obtain.

Using
the site https://stevemorse.org/census/unified.html
to find the Enumeration District (ED) for the known location of the
person(s) you are researching most times will be less bothersome and
time consuming than trying to find said person(s) by their given name
& surname {Donāt be surprised at the great number of exact and
similar names there are in most searchable databases}. Once you
follow its directions and list all of the significant data that its
search engine requires{Using Google Earth Pro to find the location
and then switching to Google Maps Street View to obtain the cross
streets its search engine will also request can zero in on the exact
ED for which you are searching}. The same site also has links to the
actual maps which you can view and download to help anyone with their
research.

Next
you click on the Enumeration District that the search engine
indicates and you will be offered your choice of viewers that can
show you each of the data sheet pages for that particular ED. This
1st method probably will be the preferred method for
researching the 1950 U. S. Census Population & Housing data that
is released on April 01, 2022 because it will take quite a while for
all the names of the many persons to be entered into a searchable
database that will be available to the general public to access.

Well six (6) years later, the latest versions of these programs are still very viable and excellent alternatives to the commercial programs of similar function! If you are repopulating your computer, it may be a time for you to try a few of them and see if they can serve your programming purposes!!

Secure your files
from hackers!

Hackers from all
over the world are now trying to get your computer to āshareā
your files with them so that they can go through them to see if there
is any information there that can be used to obtain vital information
about you.

They look for your
business account numbers, your utilities account numbers, your
family's Social Security numbers, your home and/or business
addresses, your health insurance identification number, and so on and
so forth!

They need that
information to try and gain access to your accounts and/or steal your
identity or even use your information to gain access to a larger
target such as a business institution or your bank.

I have come to the
conclusion that it is probably now safer for the average user just to
encrypt the sensitive information files that they save and are now
just sitting there located on their hard drive and/or stored
somewhere on the 'cloud'. How many users out there now have
their previous yearsā income tax returns just occupying their hard
drives? I personally prepare my income taxes using the
collection of spreadsheets that can be found and downloaded from the
internet at <span style="font-family: "arial" , serif;">http://www.excel1040.com<span style="font-family: "arial" , serif;">
and I surely wouldnāt
want that information compromised by some unknown hacker(s)!

However, this
recommendation comes with a little caveat!

The first thing that
you should realize is that when you encrypt anything; if the
protection was made by 'man' then somewhere that very same protection
can be broken by another 'man'. What you really want to do is to try
and cause the hacker to spent so much time trying to decrypt the
file(s) that it isn't cost effective for the hacker to spent so much
time and effort on your encrypted files and the hacker just moves on
to their next victim, who they perceive will be easier to victimize.

A few years ago, I
stopped buying Microsoft Office Suite and switched over to the GNU
office suite of LibreOffice
{it has a cousin named OpenOffice
that is very similar} because it is a free software product and it
serves all of the usual computer user needs as well as is able to
open or save Microsoft Office Suite files.

My recommendation is
that you ādouble encryptā all of your sensitive files using
two totally different software programs. NOW, don't be put off by
this recommendation, luckily both LibreOffice
& OpenOffice both come
with a built in encryption feature!

1.) When you go to save the file(s), just click on the word File
at the top of the screen and then click on Save As and a
dialog box will open for you to type in the new file name. You will
see a box next to the phrase 'Save with password', make sure that
box is checked and type in the new file name. You will then be
prompted for the password* to
allow you to open the file whenever it is accessed. Type in the
password that you want and the file will be saved so that only the
correct password will allow it to be opened and accessed again.

That is the first
encryption that you could use to protect your file(s).

The second program
to finally ādouble encryptā your file(s) that I recommend is
another free program, AxCrypt,
that can be downloaded off the internet. So, after you have encrypted
it with the internal encryption of the office suite, you can then
encrypt the whole file again with the stand alone program. That
follows the security trend of ātwo-stepā verification, which a great many major commercial and business institutions have been slowly adopting over the past several years. It is about time the average user join this trend

*
Password(s)
ā my suggestion for easy to remember password(s) for the user and a
very difficult password for the hacker to try and guess are old
addresses at previous residences that you, your relatives, and any of your old friends {like girl/boy friend(s)} may have had in the past,
especially if you have changed your city and/or state of residence:

{e.g.
1234MainStreet,AnyCity,AnyState(zip code)}

Such a password
fulfills all the criteria for a very STRONG password, it has
numerals, upper case letters, lower case letters, punctuation
characters, and is more than 21 characters in length! It is estimated
that it would take a super-computer working for 24 hours a day, 7
days a week, over two years to guess such a password. This is something the user will always remember and the hacker will never have a clue of what it could possibly be. Not many
hackers would spend that much time and money for computer time trying
to guess such a password and just move on to their next victim that
they have hacked after failing trying to guess the initial password.

Do you like to camping?

Are you in an "off-the-grid" situation?

Is your financial situation such that you can not really afford to spend $10.00 or more to do a load of laundry several times a week?

Do you live in an apartment and often have small loads of 'personal laundry' that
needs to be attended to on a pretty regular basis?

Then the above device shown in the link to the video may just be what you are looking for to help assist you with any of the preceding situations. Long before there were electric washing machines, most laundry in this country and still throughout the world was and is still washed by the manual process of hand washing. The usual method is one of each piece of laundry is individually 'scrubbed' by hand which take a while to go through the whole batch.

The manual washing machine that is shown is extremely low cost {less than $12.00 in total material cost}, can be used very easily in any urban, suburban, rural, and/or emergency situation. Some of the toughest "hard knocks" situations are when the electricity is not functioning for long periods of time and the home and/or commercial laundry facilities are not available to the general populace. Having this manual device sitting in a storage closet may not be a bad insurance policy. {just ask the people that were effected by Hurricane Sandy or the winter of 2014-2015 ice storms}

For the outdoorsman that enjoys going camping for any period of time, it may be just what is needed to bring some sense of civilization to that primitive lifestyle. Spending 20-30 minutes to process a load of laundry in most primitive settings my seem like a gift from society.

For the apartment dweller, it means not having to go to the basement laundry facilities hoping that the machines are unused and/or worse yet taking time and effort to travel to a commercial laundering establishment and spending the necessary money to accomplish the task there; just using the device in the bathtub or shower seems much easier.

SOMETIMES, the low tech solutions to solving everyday problems may be work better than some of the highest technical advances!

First I had ordered some of the items from the above site as "toys" for my grand daughters; then I happened to run across the Luci Lantern video on YouTube.

I had ordered one of the items listed below to add to my household's emergency kit for the few instances that due to storms, falling trees, exploding transformers, and etc. that the electricity powering our lighting fails to function properly.

https://www.mpowerd.com/

I tried a little experiment and came up with an idea for a prototype example of a similar lantern that has a slightly different operating principle than the Luci Lantern.

I had an extra 'flashlight', so I took it and an old medium sized plastic mayonnaise jar that was in the recycling bucket and went to work.

I cut an opening in the middle of the plastic top just large enough to insert just the lens section of the 'flashlight'; then using superglue I permanently mounted the 'flashlight' to the lid, I also sealed the joints around the flashlight with hot glue on the inside and outside of the lid.

I then took some aluminum foil and hot glued it to the inside of the lid where there was no 'flashlight' protruding through the inside of the lid AND on the entire bottom of the plastic jar.

I screwed the lid on the jar, squeezed the handle to charge the unit for about two minutes, turned off the kitchen light, and I had a prototype example lantern; which only cost me all of $2.63 and an old plastic mayonnaise jar the was about to be recycled. It comes with a strap so you can hang it up anywhere!

The Luci Lantern works on the principle of light energy charging the 'lithium battery', while the prototype example that I constructed works on the principle of a small dynamo charging a 'super capacitor'.

I never did test how long the "charge" would last because it is a moot point since whenever it dims you can just recharge it again in less than two (2) minutes.

If the Luci Lantern could be fitted with a 'super capacitor' instead of a lithium battery and a flat circular dynamo device instead of having light energy collectors, then it could be an all-weather source of light for those in need of a light source where and when the grid is not available. It may wind up being a little larger in its collapsed form!

this is the final result of retouching a photograph that was had taken
in 1967 in the analog age and then using digital procedure to
enhance the image to what it could of possibly appeared as all those years
ago if I was a more accomplished photographer back then!

Finally using my image manipulation program I also made a 3D anaglyph photograph from that original, you can see the 3D effect by wearing anaglyph glasses (using Red & Cyan lens). Viewing the photograph in the 3D mode really gives the viewer a feeling of how remote the wooded areas of the campus were back in 1967. Students could really find solitude for personal thoughts back then just by going for walks in the secluded areas of the campus.
In a Q&A article on 10/07/2014, 'The New York Times' published how to record live audio streams.
Here is ANOTHER way to accomplish the same feat without the hassle of having to adjust your Computer System's internal audio software setup as it is recommended in that article!
Finally, I also have video chatted with 'computer club' friend of mine that lives in the mid west using "ooVoo" software.

These internet visual communication services fits right into my new saying, "If its FREE, then it is for ME!"

The only equipment cost, other than my computer system, was $20.00 for a middle of the road 'Macally' web-cam bought on sale through "Amazon" several years ago.

The internet has really opened up the world of digital audio/visual communication to the general public way beyond anything that could have been imagined in the old analog audio/visual communication world first tried by AT&T. The world probably can thank DARPA and Steven Sasson, for by society combining their two discoveries has been the key to widespread digital audio/visual communication!

There is a newer version of program that does an excellent job of emulating the Texas Instruments Home Computer (TI-99/4A) from the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Here is the site where the program can be downloaded.
To be able to use the PLATO system you needed: TI-99/4A console, Disk controller and drives, memory expansion, and of course the PLATO interpreter cartridge.

The new magicJacK+Ā® has finally caught up with the Ooma System! The user no longer needs a computer to get VoIP 24 hr service; once the user activates the dongle on their computer {picks their user name, picks their password, and picks their telephone number} with the corporation then they can plug it into a 117V wall socket, run an Ethernet cable from the dongle to a router that is connected to DSL or Cable services, and then connect a telephone system to the phone jack on the dongle.

All the user has to do is keep their router on 24/7, they can now turn their computer off whenever they want to do so. The user can buy a good router for $49.97:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/Linksys-E1200-Wireless-N-Router/16401813

The cost of the magicJack+Ā® dongle and the 1st year of telephone service is only $69.95; then the standard rate of $19.95/per year for each year thereafter OR you can then buy five (5) years of service for $69.95 at a time (that is cheaper that one (1) month of service on Verion, AT&T, Cavalier, or any other land line company.

Remember when in the late 1960s and during the 1970s that American Telegraph and Telephone (AT&T) were the only 'game' in town and that they were going to bring the consumer 'Video Telephones' were the consumers could see to whom they were communicating as well as converse with them?

AT&T presented the consumer with various video telephone models that cost many hundreds of dollars and they charged the consumers a great deal on money for the consumer to have the system installed and to then have the service in their residence or place of business.

Well look at things now! AT&T is not the only 'game' in town and having a video telephone service is both very inexpensive for both the equipment needed {web cameras with built in microphones can be bought for as little as $25.00} and the costs to have that very same service at the residence or place of business is non-existent {āif it is free, then it is for meā}.

The advent of 'Voice over Internet Protocol' has made that wondrous service of the all those years ago a common place service of 'modern' times.

There are two such services available to the consumer; both of which can be classified as 'FREE':

1.) Google - http://www.google.com/chat/video
2.) Skype - http://www.skype.com/intl/en-us/get-skype/on-your-computer/windows/

Of these two services right now I
personally prefer the Google service because they seem to have better
'technical assistance' than does the Skype service.

However, now that Skype has officially
has become a separate division under the umbrella of Microsoft
Corporation only time will tell if their 'technical assistance' will
improve!
Current Thoughtshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06748271782698165353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6469033057775884298.post-61669144249951470772010-05-23T22:28:00.000-07:002011-10-24T17:10:08.365-07:00Retro Computing
When I bought my FIRST Home Computer back in 1983, like millions of other users out there it was a Texas Instruments - TI 99/4A. Like many other users out there I learned how to program and use it for technical office processes like word processing (TI Writer) & making and using spreadsheets (Microsoft Multiplan).

Like many a 'first love' that TI 99/4A computer was never completely remembered or wholly forgotten!!

I packed my TI 99/4A away long ago, but recently ran across Cory Burr's Win99/4A, an EXCELLENT simulator of the TI 99/4A with full speech capabilities, sound capabilities, and very good module compatibility that runs on PCs running "Windows". I can now get back into writing programs in Extended Basic, using the Mini Memory Cartridge again, and using the good educational modules for my nieces, nephews, and other children; all this on my PC.

Just go to on the http address below. It will take you directly to where the file is located and can be downloaded.

Over 200 Cartridges (Modules) in file format are available for download for Win994a. Just go to on the http address below. It will take you directly to where the files are located and can be downloaded.

http://www.99er.net/

Download and uncompress the cartridge(s) item. This may take a little while since the file is roughly 27meg. Uncompress the contents of this file into the "carts" directory under the "Win994a" folder of your hard disk. This will make all 200+ carts available to Win994a next time you start it up. Enjoy.

Try it!

Win994a-TI-99/4A Simulator for Windows

Win994a is a TI-99/4A simulator written by Cory Burr that installs and runs in the Windows environment.

Win994a is not a perfectly accurate emulation of the TI-99/4a; and it was never intended to be. The author decided not to implement certain aspects of the TI-99/4a either because they are rarely used or were considered of "no-value-added". The author vigorously apologizes to those users who will miss a favorite peripheral or item of functionality. The list below details the various functionality provided by the Win994a Simulator.

General Functionality:

Boots and runs all console ROM and GROM based functions including console BASIC.
CRU bits for the keyboard are implemented; some CRU bits for the Disk Controller and RS232 Interface are implemented.
TMS9918a video chip functionality is implemented.
TMS9919 sound chip functionality is implemented.
TMS5520 speech synthesizer chip is implemented.
Full floppy disk and disk controller functionality.
Full cassette tape functionality for CS1.
32k Memory Expansion supported.
PIO and RS232 ports are supported, but using a different method than the original TI99/4a.
Support for one joystick input (using numeric keypad).
Runs over 200 cartridges correctly. Cartridges that depend on non-implemented CRU bits or non-documented video chip operation will fail.

Specifics:

All TMS9940 CPU instructions are implemented. CPU clock ticks are accumulated for both instructions and fast/slow memory accesses. When enough clock ticks have been accumulated for 1/16 of a second real elapsed time, Win994a checks the high precision clock (available in the PentiumPro and above processors) and gives up enough of the time slice so that accurate running time is maintained.

Console based cassette tape functions for CS1 supported.
Console ROM and multiple console GROM functionality implemented.
Multiple peripheral based ROMs supported.
Multiple cartridge based ROMs, GROMs, and RAM supported.
TMS9918a: Uses DirectX for all operations. Video modes GRAPHICS, TEXT, MULTICOLOR, BITMAP, BITMAP-TEXT, and BITMAP-MULTICOLOR are implemented. Sprites, sprite coincidence, screen blanking, and vertical interrupt operations are implemented.
TMS9919: Uses DirectSound for all operations. All three voices and noise channel supported.
TMS5520: Speech synthesizer functions implemented.
Disk Controller and three floppy drives fully supported.
PIO and RS232 ports are supported, but using a different method than the original TI99/4a. PIO/1, PIO/2, RS232/1, RS232/2, RS232/3, and RS232/4 provide six separate pathways for making printouts through Window's print system. They do not provide input/output capabilities with the PC's actual hardware ports.
Support for one joystick input (using the keyboard numeric keypad) is implemented.

***********************************

Using RXB [Rich Extended Basic] and FUNLWEB [Funnel Web] together is as close as one can get to having a "DOS" like operating system for the TI99/4A Computer along with its Emulators & Simulators*. No longer having a physical TI99/4A computer set up, one can imagine this must be the same situation for those users that have the ability to use this physical set up of their computer.

Again this example just shows anyone that is willing to investigate how the potential of this computer was not developed by its parent company in a corporate decision to not have this consumer computer compete with its business computer.

RXB was developed by Richard Gilbertson and FUNLWEB was developed by Tony & Will McGovern, these two groups of gentlemen were thousands of miles apart and probably developed their programs out of a necessity because the 'operating system' that was offered by the parent computer company was so inferior. Sometimes the small group can really out perform the big company.

Now maybe the TI99/4A Computer along with its Emulators & Simulators* users with the RXB & FUNLWEB programs could start a mild rediscovery of this computer type if they each made a concerted effort to publicize the availability of this material worldwide over the Internet
This is more of a convenience since the users don't have to plug in a separate electrical cord, but it's also easy to overload the USB ports if the users plug a number of devices into many of the available ports.Does the user's PC's USB ports supply enough electricity to power all the devices they have attached to them? Plugging too much gear into a bus-powered USB hub (one with no external power adapter) can overwhelm a USB port by demanding more than the 500 mA it can supply.

Check the power demands on any USB port in Windows XP by right-clicking My Computer and choosing Properties, Hardware, Device Manager.

1. Double-click Universal Serial Bus controllers,
2. Double-click the USB Root Hub entry, choose the Power tab, and add up the amounts in the "Power Required" column.

(Below is the advice which many users forget about.)

In a few rare instances, the USB port on the user's computer may not have enough electrical power for the magicJackĀ® dongle to work properly.

Try using a externally AC powered USB hub to plug the magicJackĀ® dongle into instead of using the computer's USB port if there are 'many' other USB devices connected to the computer or if the magicJackĀ® dongle acts erratically with audio and connection problems.
[e.g. Startech .COM ST4200USB 4-PORT USB 2.0 HUB (ST4200USB)Ā»(Cost $19.14)]

magicJackĀ® may or may not work best when plugged directly into a USB port on the computer.

Do not plug the magicJackĀ® dongle into a multi port USB hub that is not AC powered.

Another option if you don't want to buy yet another device is to check the Power Management function of your computers USB Root Hub. Under Windows XP, disabling the Power Management for all USB Root Hubs in your system may resolve the problem.

Here is how to do it:

1. Open the Device Manager (Start-> right click on "My Computer", click on "Properties" -> Hardware -> Device Manager)
2. Look under the category Universal Serial Bus controllers and find the USB Root Hub.
3. Right click and select Properties, go to the Power Management tab
4. Uncheck the box "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power." and click "OK".

Repeat this for each of the USB Root Hubs shown in the Device Manager.

After the user has connected the magicJackĀ® dongle for the first time, registered the device, and has the 'softphone' on the screen, the user should probably run TCP Optimizer to ātuneā the computer to work with it in an efficient manner; it can be downloaded from the following website:

http://www.speedguide.net/downloads.php

The program can aid both the novice and the advanced user in tweaking related TCP/IP parameters in the Windows Registry, making it easy to tune your system to the type of Internet connection used. The tool uses advanced algorithms, and the bandwidth delay product to find the best TCP Window for your specific connection speed. It provides for easy tuning of all related TCP/IP parameters, such as MTU, RWIN, and even advanced ones like QoS and ToS/Diffserv prioritization. The program works with all current versions of Windows, and includes additional tools, such as testing average latency over multiple hosts, and finding the largest possible packet size (MTU).

The user can use the TCP Optimizer by following these short instructions:

1. Choose the maximum Connection Speed from the slider bar (the maximum available bandwidth, in kilobits per second)
2. Choose the Network Interface, or check to Modify All Network Adapters
3.
